Herbert George Wells was an English writer whose work ranged from science fiction and utopian fiction to history, politics, social criticism, and autobiography. He wrote more than fifty novels and many short stories, and became a major public intellectual in the early twentieth century. Wells is best remembered for landmark works such as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, and The Invisible Man, and he is often called the father of science fiction.
