Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850 and became one of the best-known writers of adventure fiction, horror, travel writing, and essays. He wrote classic works including Treasure Island, Kidnapped, A Child's Garden of Verses, and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and spent much of his later life traveling in search of a climate that would suit his health. He died in Samoa in 1894.
